The composer on his material hardship
[...] I am in an unenviable moral and financial state. Not that I feel discouraged [...], but I feel revolted by the manner in which artists are left to fend for themselves in a country so rotten with comfort and cakes as ours. I can’t think about it calmly. I’ll probably end up borrowing money from a bank if I can find someone to vouch for me, because I’m four months behind in rent, not to mention the gastronomical excesses I am exposed to; and my clothes! They are starting to become ripe for a good performance of the Threepenny Opera.
